About the Talk
Focus Is a Skill: What the Martial Arts Mat Teaches Children Who Learn Differently
Children with ADHD are often told to sit still, focus, and try harder —usually in environments built for children who already can.
The experience at Ko Martial Arts works differently.
The martial arts mat rewards movement, provides immediate feedback, breaks big goals into visible steps, and gives children opportunities to fail safely and try again—sometimes within the same minute.
In this session, Bronson Ko draws on more than 20 years of teaching thousands of children in Johnson County, many of them neurodiverse, to explore what actually helps build focus, confidence, and follow-through —and what can quietly undermine them.
Parents will leave with:
• Practical language they can use at home when a child is struggling with focus or follow-through
• A clearer understanding of what to look for in activities and programs their child participates in
• Ideas for creating opportunities for children to practice persistence without shame
• A realistic perspective on how confidence is built over months, not moments
• A better understanding of why movement, immediate feedback, and achievable challenges can be so powerful for children who learn differently
This isn't about turning every child into a martial artist. It's about understanding what happens when we change the environment and give kids the opportunity to practice the skills we're asking them to develop.
