COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members across the Kansas City metro will host the second annual memorial ride for firefighter-paramedic Graham Hoffman on May 9 to honor his legacy, raise funds for safety equipment and scholarships, and support first responders (last year's ride raised $70,000).  KMBC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Strips Chicken, BBQ and Brewing in Lenexa is growing its own tomatoes, basil, kale, and more in a new garden—using fresh produce for sandwiches and salads while testing flavored ice cubes with pansies. Owner Todd Johnson plans to add more garden beds and sell frozen soups this summer.  KMBC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michael Riley was chosen as the new president of Bishop Miege High School, effective July 1, and he brings 13 years of Catholic education experience. Archbishop Shawn McKnight appointed him after a national search to strengthen the school's mission of forming students in faith (he is a Johnson County resident).  Johnson County Post
  • Kansas lawmakers debated HB 2468 today as it could shift millions from public schools to private school tax credits & critics warned the measure, which passed the House last month, might create a $61 million gap in special education funding in Johnson County.  KSHB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfire risk rises today as Kansas and Missouri enter fire season, with dry conditions and strong winds expected from late February through mid-April. Experts stress that most wildfires are human caused, so residents should manage campfires and debris burning safely to protect their communities.  KCTV 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Johnson County Election Office invites residents aged 5 and up to join the I Voted Sticker Design Contest to celebrate local civic pride. Submissions are due by 5 p.m. on April 17 and winners will be recognized on June 11.  Johnson County

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A proposed Dillons grocery store at College and Sunnybrook, across from Meadow Lane Elementary, will include a 100,000 sqft store plus a 14-pump gas station. City staff supported a larger design despite size limits to ensure smoother business operations.  Olathe Reporter
