Good morning, Olathe. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 14th of March.
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Isaac Collins, a local store owner, is changing his Yogurtini stores to Fifth & Emery and will open a new frozen yogurt shop downtown at 126 N. Cherry St in March 2026. The updated stores will show a fresh design and more treats — with plans for more shops in Lenexa this summer and Shawnee in fall 2026. Johnson County Post
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Agriculture cut $1 billion from COVID-era funds that helped food banks and schools, and Harvesters Community Food Network lost about $1.5 million in produce over two years. The group now must seek new donations to support Kansas farmers—local growers could face a tough season. KSHB
- ➤ A Kansas Senate bill sponsored by Sen. Kellie Warren would bar registered sex offenders from school property after an incident at a Blue Valley school dance raised safety concerns. Many safety advocates and law enforcement support the measure as a needed way to protect children + some defense advocates warn it may isolate offenders and hurt rehabilitation. Johnson County Post
- ➤ Shawnee Planning Commission approved plans for a nearly 42-acre single-family residential subdivision called Village at Clear Creek that will feature 62 lots and 15 acres of green space. Some local residents worry that narrow roads near the project may struggle with increased traffic, and city staff plan future road improvements—such as a roundabout at 71st—Clare Road. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A new study by the Urban Institute shows that Black Kansans face higher death rates for seven of nine leading causes than other groups. Funded by REACH Healthcare Foundation, the report urges policymakers to improve data collection and address health disparities—while gaps in county data leave part of the picture unclear.
