CRIME NEWS

  • A former Olathe East High student who shot and injured three people in 2022 was sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempted premeditated murder — he pleaded guilty and will serve eight months concurrently for possessing a gun as a convicted felon in Johnson County District Court.  Johnson County Post
  • Olathe Police said a man in his 50s or 60s wearing a red shirt and dark pants tried to lure children into his vehicle near Southglen Park on Monday at about 1:30 p.m. on the 11300 block of South Clare Road—officers arrived, spoke with the juveniles and their parent, and did not locate his vehicle.  Johnson County Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educators in Olathe and other Johnson County districts opposed a new Kansas bill that might drop funding for special education and force schools to shift money from other programs. School leaders, who have redirected $100 million from the state fund since 2024, are now working with lawmakers to secure stable funding—efforts seen as vital for the future of special education.  FOX 4 Kansas City
  • Kansas Education Commissioner Randy Watson urged local districts to cancel breaks or extend the school year to make up for roughly eight snow days lost this winter—he also proposed half-day summer school for kindergarten through third graders who are below grade level in reading or math. His recommendations aim to boost academic recovery after prolonged learning losses.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials with the Kansas Department of Transportation will hold public meetings on the K-10 and Lone Elm interchange project on April 10 from 5-7 p.m. at the K-State Olathe Innovation Campus auditorium—attendees can join breakout groups to ask questions following concerns raised by local city leaders.  KCTV 5
  • Today Olathe announced it will begin sewer improvement projects in 2025 and 2026 with a total cost of $15 million; the largest project will renovate the Indian Creek sewer main for $14,872,400 to repair structural damage and stop leaks of up to 62 million gallons of water each year—repairs will include grouting and resealing more than 27,000 feet of pipe.  Olathe Reporter
  • The Olathe City Council renewed two contracts for citywide services. One contract is a one-year, $250,000 deal with Crafco that supplies crack repair material for the Field Operations Division—ensuring standardized repairs on city streets.  Olathe Reporter
