ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Andrew 'A.J.' McDonald, a 20-year-old KU student from Shawnee, died last week after he struck a tree while skiing at Winter Park Resort in Colorado and was pronounced dead at Denver Winter Park Medical Center. Johnson County Post
- ➤ Fire crews from Olathe and Lenexa responded to a garage fire Monday night near 122nd Street and Foxridge Drive where flames were visible upon arrival—an adult was evaluated for smoke inhalation but declined treatment and one resident was displaced as a fire investigator works to determine the cause. BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Kansas City–based Tiki Taco will open a new downtown Shawnee location at 11200 Johnson Dr, taking over the former Al Chile space near Flying Cow Gelato and Shawnee City Hall; the restaurant will serve coastal-inspired tacos, burritos, and cocktails with vibrant decor and a covered patio for 60. CEO Eric Knott said the Shawnee eatery is slated to open in July or August as its third Johnson County location and that an additional Olathe restaurant is expected to open in early May (pending construction). CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An Overland Park woman has been charged with a felony for failing to stop after she struck a pedestrian on July 4th on 95th Street—resulting in the death of 36-year-old Joshua Willet—and she posted bond on March 21 with her preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. via Zoom. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Tony Miksa, a community college president from Tennessee, will serve as the new president of Johnson County Community College starting in July — the board unanimously chose him on March 13 to replace Interim President Judy Korb. His selection comes as the college closed its diversity office on March 1 to preserve federal funding — a decision made amid national higher education shifts. Johnson County Post
- ➤ Supporters of the Kansas StarBase program are asking lawmakers to restore funding after a budget cut closed it in February and caused 29 full-time staff to go on unpaid leave at sites in Salina, Manhattan, Topeka, Wichita and Kansas City—Melissa Peat said federal money allocated to the DoD may help restart the program. Donations have helped keep the program alive, which gives about 1,000 students a five-day, hands-on learning experience in STEM. KSNT

- ➤ Despite Congress passing a continuing resolution on March 14, the Kansas City STARBASE program remains suspended since February due to new federal funding guidelines, and educators in Lenexa say students have missed hands-on STEM learning since February 4 while waiting for funds to be officially appropriated before April 28. - ➤ Rep. Mari-Lynn Poskin decried a bill that would remove a three day grace period for mail in ballots and warned that the change may reduce early voting options in Johnson County. Gov. Kelly vetoed the bill on Monday—lawmakers now face pressure to sustain the veto and protect advanced voting methods. Johnson County Post
- ➤ On Monday, Kansas senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran teamed with U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids to send a letter to USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy urging the construction of a new, modern post office in downtown Olathe—designed to address ongoing service delays. The bipartisan effort supports local plans to improve postal operations during the city's revitalization process. KCTV 5
- ➤ Governor Laura Kelly signed Senate Bill 8 on March 24 which requires all drivers to change lanes or slow down when passing stalled vehicles with flashing lights—this law expands protections that were once limited to emergency vehicles. KCTV 5
