CRIME NEWS

  • A teenager was sentenced on March 25 to one year in a juvenile correctional facility for bringing a gun to Shawnee Mission South High School last year — he will serve his sentence with 107 days credited from time already spent in custody.  Johnson County Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fisher Stewart—an Olathe native—has joined the national tour of Back to the Future: The Musical as Dave McFly, the lesser-known McFly brother, after being hand-picked by Bob Gale. He returns to perform at Music Hall before his hometown crowd as the show runs until April 6th.  KCTV 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Blue Valley West High School senior Aashrita Musti won a Kindness Action Scholarship for her project Safe Reflections which had classmates swap post-it notes with insecurities and compliments to help them feel better about themselves—she said learning to love oneself is the first step to caring for others and plans to bring this lesson to college next year.  KSHB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County will host several Earth Day events as it prepares for April 22—these include community cleanups on April 5 and April 19, a recycling and educational event at Olathe Public Library on April 19, and a recycling workshop in Mission on April 22. Additional activities such as Arbor Day celebrations, native plant sales, and citywide garage sales in May will offer residents more opportunities to support environmental care.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Olathe City Government is starting six water management projects to improve stormwater and sewage systems in the coming months. One project will use biological nutrient removal to add 3.5 million gallons of treatment capacity and replace outdated equipment at the Cedar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.  Olathe Reporter
  • The Olathe City Council is evaluating five road projects that will receive up to 50 percent reimbursement from the CARS Program from 2026 to 2030. One project will be chosen per year, including routes on Quivira Road (143rd Street to 151st), Lone Elm Road (159th Street to 167th), Dennis Avenue (Hedge Lane to Parker), Dennis Avenue (Lakeshore Drive to Hedge Lane) and 119th Street (Lone Elm Road to Woodland Road).  Olathe Reporter
  • The Olathe City Government will begin construction in 2026 of a new westbound right turn lane from Spruce to northbound Parker Street on K-7 to improve capacity and reduce delays—adding new pavement, curbs and gutters along with a retaining wall.  Olathe Reporter

HEALTH NEWS

  • Children's Mercy Hospital Kansas in Overland Park began a $152 million expansion to boost patient care and add new services. The first phase, focused on surgical services (to be finished in summer 2026), is underway and a new office building for outpatient care (opening in summer 2027) will follow.  KMBC
