COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Johnson County is offering $400 mini-grants for neighborhood block parties that help residents build trust and prepare for emergencies. Interested groups can apply through the Stronger Together program (applications open through Sept. 15).  KCTV 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Olathe West High School has started a choir class for students with special needs. Choir director Dr. Ryan Olsen said the class uses large printed music (to help those with visual impairments) and small instruments to build confidence and skills.  KSHB
  • For nearly two decades, a little-known Johnson County sales tax has generated $15 million a year and is expected to yield 500 jobs and $1.5 billion in economic output by 2030—funds that built the K-State Olathe campus and expanded KU Edwards and the Clinical Research Center to support local higher education and research.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County commissioners approved a new policy to explore using underused public land for attainable housing options + county staff will complete an inventory by Sept. 1 to guide future development.  Johnson County Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • Keaton Wagler (Big Ten Freshman of the Year) is set to play in the Final Four today as he leads Illinois University against UConn in a national semifinal. The SM Northwest standout, who won state titles in 2024 and 2025, has Johnson County cheering him on.  Johnson County Post
  • Kansas lawmakers approved an 11-member sports authority to manage a $3 billion stadium project and new Chiefs headquarters in Olathe if Gov. Kelly signs the bill — board appointments are due by Aug. 31 and funding will come from STAR Bonds to cover construction costs.  Johnson County Post
