- ➤ J's BBQ opened a few weeks ago in the old Johnny's BBQ spot off Old 56 Highway (1375 W. Old 56 Highway) in Olathe, and owner Josh Deal said the restaurant will serve double-smoked burnt ends, double decker sandwiches, smoked ribs and Southern-style pork wraps while retaining many of the previous staff. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Pope Francis appointed Shawn McKnight (Bishop of Jefferson City) as the new archbishop for the Archdiocese of Kansas City, replacing Joseph Naumann who retired in June. McKnight, a Wichita native, will be installed on May 27 and takes over after Father Arul Carasala was shot and killed last week. KMBC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers in the House and Senate have disagreed on how to lower rising property taxes — leaving homeowners with only a minor state tax cut that saves about $25 per year on a $150,000 home. - ➤ A new nonprofit linked to VanTrust Real Estate partnered with Johnson County commissioners to improve affordable housing options by approving a non-binding letter of intent. - ➤ Governor Laura Kelly signed a bill Tuesday that created a water program task force to study Kansas’ water challenges and funding. The task force—comprising 13 voting members and a five-member work group—will deliver a preliminary report by Jan. 31, 2026 and a final report by Jan. 31, 2027 to guide future investment in water resources. - ➤ As of Tuesday, April 8, over 1.9 million Kansas residents have obtained Real IDs and more than 350,000 have not—starting May 7, travelers must present a Real ID or a passport to enter federal facilities, commercial airports or nuclear power plants. KSNT
