COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday afternoon, between 650 and 800 people gathered at Thompson Park in Overland Park for Free State Days to defend democracy and protest policies seen as anti-democratic. Organizers from Boots on the Ground Midwest stressed Kansas' free state heritage (a reminder of its pre-Civil War legacy) and local speakers urged officials to take action (calling for stronger public safeguards).  Johnson County Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jon Stewart—70 and a longtime banker in Lake Quivira—worked hard after several jobs and now raises funds for student scholarships at JCCC. He has been named the Johnson Countian of the Year and will be honored at a gala in November.  Johnson County Post
  • Johnson County Community College will start its summer session on June 2 for both 8-week and 4-week classes and continue with a second 4-week session on June 30, ending on July 24. Students must apply by May 2 and pay tuition by 6 p.m. on May 27—summer classes give them a chance to earn credits and work toward degrees or certificates.  Johnson County Post
