GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kansas schools will use state funding of $10 million to pay for an AI system by ZeroEyes — a tool that uses security cameras to detect guns — as lawmakers debate its accuracy. Officials say the system alerts police quickly — and critics point out it has triggered false alarms before — raising questions over its reliability. Johnson County Post
- ➤ Olathe City Government has renewed contracts to invest $53 million in improving aging water and sewer systems; the upgrade will replace nearly eight miles of sewer mains and build a new gravity sanitary sewer interceptor that diverts sewage to Cedar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant for service along Old 56 Highway (west of Robinson Drive). - ➤ KidsTLC, an Olathe nonprofit, is set to receive industrial revenue bonds as the city backs its plan to expand local facilities. The Olathe City Council approved a statement of intent for $1,795,000 in bonds—funds that will support buying land, building and equipping the new KidsTLC facilities. Olathe Reporter
- ➤ The Olathe City Council voted Tuesday to sell the one-acre property at 1114 E. Santa Fe for $590,000 and expects Falco to use the site for a new commercial project + the sale includes the former Jiffy Lube building and part of the old Sutherland Lumber location. Olathe Reporter
- ➤ The city council approved a plan Tuesday for a new police training facility that will be built on 95.6 acres (northwest of W. 167th Street and I-35). The project will come in three phases that first add an outdoor shooting range with two small training buildings, then a 21,000 square foot facility, and finally an outdoor driving course. - ➤ On Tuesday, the Olathe City Council approved projects totaling over 1.3 million square feet that may pressure the unpaved western section of 167th Street—Mayor John Bacon asked staff to study the issue as the developments will create nearly 800 new jobs. Olathe Reporter
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Olathe resident Suzanne Johnson has lived with permanent facial paralysis since she had measles as a child + she now uses her experience to stress the need for proper vaccination. Health officials confirmed 46 measles cases in Kansas and warn that unvaccinated people easily spread the virus + urging parents to talk to doctors about immunizations. Johnson County Post
