ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Kansas Department of Transportation truck hit a bridge over I-35 in Olathe on Thursday at about 2:25 p.m. when a mechanical malfunction raised its tank—flipping the dump bed and spilling brine water—and the 65-year-old driver was taken to a hospital with suspected minor injuries while cleanup caused a 3.5-mile backup until all lanes reopened before 5 p.m.  Johnson County Post
  • An investigation found a Marine helicopter crash near Pine Valley on Feb. 6th was mainly caused by pilot error—icy conditions and impaired night vision contributed to the accident that killed five service members, including one from Olathe.  KSHB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Merck Animal Health announced Thursday plans to expand its De Soto plant with an $895 million investment that will add 2,500 construction jobs and eventually 200 full-time roles when manufacturing starts in 2030. Site preparation and design have begun to boost capacity for large-molecule vaccines and biologic products (according to the Kansas City Area Development Council).  FOX 4 Kansas City
  • Tyson Kilbey opened a new jiu jitsu studio in Olathe in April at 15837 S. Mahaffie St. where he teaches jiu jitsu for all ages; the studio offers group classes + private instruction and an eight-week self defense course for women and runs classes Monday through Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. + Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Olathe City Government approved a contract renewal with Paymentus that set a $505,000 annual fee for credit card processing services in 2025—the decision came after a brief debate over best practices following the city's 2014 cessation of credit card fees for utility accounts.  Olathe Reporter
