- ➤ The Salvation Army said its emergency shelter in Olathe will remain open for former residents of Aspen Place Apartments in Gardner until May 31 as they adjust after being forced out on May 6. Residents must check in between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. (screening required) and those with pets can drop them off at a pet shelter across the street (pet care provided). KCTV 5
- ➤ Area Hy-Vee Store Directors gathered today to pack 500 meal kits donated by Hiland Dairy and linebacker Nick Bolton that kick off Harvesters’ food drive—Hy-Vee developed two recipes for tuna casserole and pasta primavera, and the kits will be available at all 19 local stores for a $12 donation starting May 16. This drive supports efforts to help local neighbors facing food insecurity. KCTV 5
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Prosecutors say Mission man Isaiah Joest was arrested Sunday after a call for a domestic disturbance on the 5100 block of Foxridge Drive in Johnson County—he allegedly fired his gun at a victim and now faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm, fleeing law enforcement and battery of a law enforcement officer. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Prairie Village’s Spinning Tree Theatre replaced nearly all of the $15,000 cut from its grant by donations after the National Endowment for the Arts cancelled funding for the play First Generation. The group now must fund its next show Super Jewels! A New Musical set for June 20-22 and has urged supporters to contact their Congressional representatives — a move that shows its stand against federal funding cuts. Johnson County Post
- ➤ Big Slick, an annual charity event in the Kansas City area, will feature celebrity guests like Paul Rudd, Rob Riggle, and Jason Sudeikis during three events scheduled for May 30 to 31— a press conference at the Children’s Mercy Research Institute, a softball game at Kauffman Stadium, and a party at T-Mobile Center. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ I-435 from Antioch to Quivira reopened Monday morning while the ramp from eastbound I-435 to north U.S. 69 Highway and the ramp from north U.S. 69 Highway to westbound I-435 remain closed—both will stay closed until October as part of the U.S. 69 Corridor Modernization and Expansion Project. - ➤ Johnson County Parks and Recreation District is one of four finalists for the 2025 National Gold Medal Award, an honor compared to the industry's Super Bowl. The department, which is the largest child care provider and manages parks, trails and a museum, will learn the winner at the NRPA conference—where the decision will be made—in September.
