- ➤ Olathe Salvation Army opened its emergency shelter for over 100 families displaced when Gardner City Government condemned the Aspen Place Apartments on May 6 — the complex was declared unsafe due to water, sewer, and road hazards. Olathe Reporter
- ➤ Harvesters released new data showing that more residents in the Kansas City region sought food help as donations and federal funding fell. The food bank estimated nearly 375,000 people in its 27-county area, including more than 110,000 children, experienced food insecurity— and it hopes the Kansas food tax elimination will ease some challenges. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Gary Bailey (24) pleaded guilty to two counts for stealing merchandise worth $418,000 from 23 stores across six states from March 2023 to January 2024 and faces up to 10 years in prison without parole along with a pending restitution order at sentencing. KCTV 5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Johnson County and its community college have partnered to launch a scholarship that covers all tuition and fees for dependents of first responders killed in the line of duty—this program serves children from 28 agencies and was highlighted by Olathe Fire Chief Jeff DeGraffenreid. - ➤ Superintendents from Olathe School District, Blue Valley Schools, and Shawnee Mission opposed the Educational Choice for Children Act in a letter that stated the bill would let public funds go to private schools.
