  • Derek Buckridge—Urban Trail Co. president and a construction supervisor—leads local volunteers in building and maintaining trails for hiking and mountain biking at places like Cedar Niles Park in Olathe. The nonprofit partners with local agencies to keep trails safe and clear and uses about 500 to 600 volunteers for construction and upkeep.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Olathe Police are moving forward with a new $15M shooting range after City Council approved rezoning on May 6 for a site near I-35 and 167th Street—an area buffered by nearby industrial development and a rock quarry. The project will be built in three phases with $2M from the FBI and is expected to finish in early 2026 while preserving most woodland and the stream corridor.  Johnson County Post
  • The Olathe City Council and city staff will meet on Tuesday to explore plans for new attainable housing—an effort to ease rising tax bills from a limited supply of affordable homes. Officials said the discussion will guide future steps in the city’s housing market.  Olathe Reporter
