BUSINESS NEWS

  • High school sweethearts Tyler and Madison Wiggins reopened the Children's Lighthouse daycare at 14200 W. 135th St. in May as their first business venture. They operate the center Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a Montessori-based curriculum to help local children build academic and social skills.  Johnson County Post

CRIME NEWS

  • Joseph Wacaster, 32, was sentenced to life in prison for the 2024 killing of his boyfriend in Johnson County; he received a (Hard 25) sentence requiring a minimum of 25 years behind bars.  FOX 4 Kansas City
  • Jackson County Legislator Manny Abarca was arrested on domestic battery charges in Johnson County on Wednesday—he was taken at 1:40 p.m., released on a $1,500 bond at 3:22 p.m., and his missing son was later verified as safe.  KCTV 5
  • U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested Guillermo Lugardo-Valerio—wanted on a bench warrant in Johnson County for a parole violation and charges from a 2022 incident in Olathe—near Oswego, New York on Tuesday and transferred him to U.S. Marshals custody as he awaits extradition to Kansas.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Olathe mayor John Bacon was honored Tuesday for serving 30 years on the city council and becoming the longest-serving member in city history. He first joined in 1995, served as mayor pro tem after Mayor Michael Copeland’s passing in 2020, and won his first mayoral election in 2023.  Olathe Reporter
  • Nearly 180 candidates filed to run for local offices in Johnson County, covering roles from mayors to school boards ahead of the fall elections. The filing deadline passed Monday and 92 contests are on the ballot—48 of these races have more than one candidate running.  Johnson County Post
  • The Olathe City Council is reviewing new downtown signage rules — council member Kevin Gilmore said he wants to keep the guidelines flexible for businesses as the city updates the downtown area.  Olathe Reporter
