ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police are investigating a fatal accident in Olathe after a man was struck and killed by a train at 3 p.m. near West Elm Street and South Kansas Avenue, and traffic is delayed on Kansas Avenue between Elm and Harold (the victim’s name has not been released).  KMBC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Char Bar Smoked Meats & Pickleball, the third incoming downtown restaurant, is asking for a special sales tax incentive to help fund its new location—its request may cover about $9 million in construction costs. A petition from Sunflower Olathe 1 was submitted on June 5th to create a Community Improvement District that will use two percent of sales taxes for up to 22 years to support the project.  Olathe Reporter

CRIME NEWS

  • A Lenexa man was charged with attempted capital murder and felony interference after he fired his handgun at an officer during an exchange of gunfire in Shawnee near 67th Street and Lackman Road just after 5 a.m. Tuesday—he remains in custody on a $500,000 bond with his next court appearance set for July 3 at 10 a.m.  Johnson County Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents in JCPRD are invited to complete an online survey by July 15 & share their views to update the Public Art Master Plan, which originally guided projects through 2026 and will now extend to 2038. The updated plan will be submitted to the JCPRD Board for approval by early 2026 and will guide future art installations in parks, trails, and facilities.  Johnson County Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A high school team from Shawnee Mission School District won the National High School BBQ Championship on June 5 at Gardner Edgerton High School—marking the first time Kansas hosted the contest. The Broadmoor Bistro team named Caught Smokin’ beat 87 high school teams from seven states with a surprise win in the chili category after borrowing brown sugar.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city government approved tree protection fencing and a stormwater runoff management system for a new police shooting range complex covering 95 acres near W. 167th Street and Interstate 35. Construction will start in September 2025 with a target completion in August 2026 as part of a $15,150,000 project for the Olathe Police Department and public safety staff following previous approvals including a unanimous council vote.  Olathe Reporter
  • Olathe City Council expressed concerns about a new parking garage agreement with Johnson County but approved the plan that will add 379 parking spaces—an extra 225 spaces to the current city hall lot—at a total cost of $22.5 million, with the county and city paying $11 million and $11.5 million respectively. The city will own and maintain the garage once it is completed as both parties hold firm on their investments.  Olathe Reporter
