  • Great Plains SPCA is offering free Bring Your Pet Inside Kits to help pet owners keep animals safe from the summer heat, providing essentials like a crate, treats, toys, collar and leash, and bedding while donations help the service continue into winter + they advise keeping pets indoors during the hottest hours.  KCTV 5
  • Pools in Shawnee and Mission are fully staffed for summer—officials report that Shawnee has 100 lifeguards while Mission has about 75 to 80 on duty after staffing losses last year. Training programs and hiring efforts began last November to help keep community swimmers safe.  KSHB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Shine with Joy Foundation partners with CorePower Yoga for a free yoga event held today at the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center to honor former Chiefs cheerleader Krystal Anderson during the summer solstice. The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon and invites community members to practice yoga and connect while supporting the foundation with donations.  KSHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shawnee Mission School District still has enrollment open for Summer Enrichment classes for students from Pre-K through seventh grade at Westridge Middle School—classes run in morning and afternoon sessions with care options available. Classes began on June 9 and will resume on June 23 to run until July 18—no sessions were held on June 19-20 or during the week of June 30-July 4.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said involuntary mental health commitment cases have surged from 145 to 623 in the past 10 years, as families and law enforcement work to get help before behavior turns dangerous. Local officials stressed the need for more beds and resources at state hospitals in Larned and Osawatomie — a public safety measure to keep the community protected.  KSHB
