CRIME NEWS

  • Christopher Yates was awarded $5.7 million today after a jury found that two Merriam hospital professionals were negligent in discharging his wife, Kim Yates, who died by suicide days after treatment—making it the largest wrongful death verdict in Johnson County.  Johnson County Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Theatre in the Park will show My Fair Lady from June 28 to July 6 at 8 p.m. nightly at its outdoor venue on Renner Road near Shawnee Mission Park. Box office doors open at 6 p.m. with adult tickets costing $12 and weather updates will be shared online—ensuring visitors know if plans change.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County admitted in the spring that Blue Valley homeowners were billed incorrectly for 2023 and 2024 taxes—causing extra charges, sometimes over $2,000, for some homeowners. The county extended the interest-free payment deadline to May 11 and has collected about 67% of the total owed from roughly 250 taxpayers.  Johnson County Post
  • Kansas will hold a Legislative Coordinating Council meeting on July 7 at 2 p.m. to discuss extending the STAR Bond deadline after Chiefs President Mark Donovan sent a letter requesting extra time to finalize plans for an NFL project—Senate President Ty Masterson noted that while the current law expires on June 30, it allows for a full-year extension if agreed upon.  FOX 4 Kansas City
  • Kansas leaders will meet on July 7 to discuss a request by Chiefs President Mark Donovan to extend the STAR bonds deadline — originally set for June 30 for projects that could bring a new NFL stadium and related facilities to the state. Senate President Ty Masterson said he plans to extend the deadline while expecting the issue to be resolved by the end of 2025.  KCTV 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kansas nursing home investigators are severely understaffed with only 29 of 61 positions filled, which experts say endangers residents by delaying investigations of neglect and abuse. The death of 94-year-old Joan Cody at an Olathe care facility has spurred calls for reforms — officials may raise pay to fill vacancies — to better protect vulnerable individuals.  Johnson County Post
