Following a Tuesday retirement announcement by city manager Michael Wilkes—who served for 27 years—the city council will meet in a closed session to decide on his replacement scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

On Tuesday, Olathe city government renewed several traffic contracts and set up a new fire safety contract for hydrant inspections.

The streetlight contract with Custom Lighting Services — Black and McDonald — was renewed for one year with an anticipated cost of $500,000.

The Olathe City Council voted Tuesday 7—0 to raise the transient guest tax so it now matches nearby cities.

The tax revenue will be split equally between the Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau to support economic development.

The Kansas Department of Transportation received federal approval to start work on the long-term K-10 Corridor Capacity Improvement Plan in Johnson County—plans that may add lanes and improve interchanges near Lexington Avenue to ease rising traffic.

KDOT will begin future phases and offer public feedback as the area grows—efforts linked to increasing local development.

Shawnee native Cameron Meade, who finished second at Old Shawnee Days by eating 25 hot dogs in 10 minutes, will compete today in Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest—a Fourth of July event known worldwide where top eaters like Joey Chestnut will take on the challenge.
