  • KMBC 9 Cares for Kids and KVC Health Systems have launched a back-to-school drive to supply foster children with needed school supplies and clothing in our community—donations starting at $9 help provide essential items while a $50 gift lets a child choose their own outfit. The drive aims to support at least 1,000 foster kids as they prepare for the new school year.  KMBC

  • A Florida wood-fired pizza chain will open a new restaurant at 15241 W. 119th St. in Olathe later this fall as its first in the Kansas City metro area — it will serve build-your-own pizzas, salads, garlic cheese bread, and sweets in the space that Smashburger left.  Johnson County Post

  • Olathe author Brittany Kelly released her first children’s book 'Freckles', which is based on her daughter Maverick’s friendship with a decoy duck — the book debuted on June 24 and is available on several platforms — Kelly said she may write a follow-up if readers respond well.  Johnson County Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Olathe Municipal Court announced that people with traffic fines can donate $15 worth of new school supplies for a $50 credit towards their fines—this offer runs from July 7 to Aug. 4 and will help supply over 2,200 backpacks for students. The donation benefits the Olathe Public Schools Foundation as students prepare for the school year.  FOX 4 Kansas City

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Retired engineer David Silverstein found that the stormwater plans for Kate Guimbellot’s College Meadows home in Olathe show the lot was designed to flood—worsened by a nearby widening of College Boulevard. Guimbellot said her home has flooded three times and she now feels let down by the city as she awaits a resolution through a filed tort claim.  Johnson County Post
  • Kansas lawmakers met Monday at 2:00 p.m. to consider extending STAR bond funding to support stadium projects for the Chiefs and Royals after the teams asked for more time to decide on moving from Missouri — the offer could be renewed for up to a year.  KSHB
