Johnson County announced its annual Best of Recreation winners across 11 categories including Park Lanes Family Fun Center for Best Bowling Alley, Lenexa Rec Center for Best Community Center, and Old Shawnee Days for Best Festival.

The awards recognize top local spots in parks, sports, and community facilities.

Danny's Burger Shack, a Kansas City-based burger joint, is set to open its first Johnson County location next month at 7174 Renner Road in Shawnee — near Minsky’s and Rize N Shine — and will offer smashburgers and hand-breaded onion rings made with fresh beef.

The winners of the Best of Johnson County Child Care and Activities awards were announced, with Johnson County Park and Recreation District winning Best Youth Sports Group, Lord of Life Early Education Center winning Best Preschool, and The Wordshop winning Best Tutoring Company + other winners honored by community votes.

Olathe Fire Station No. 9 on College Boulevard near Woodland opened for business Monday — providing enhanced emergency coverage to a growing area as new apartments and vertical construction increase, Captain Mike Hall said the station will help keep average response times to four minutes.
