Overnight storms on July 17 knocked out power for over 12,000 residents in Johnson County and led to water rescues from flooded roads, including a closure of I-35 in Merriam—officials reported no injuries and a flood warning remained until 9 a.m. Thursday.

City officials approved Tuesday a 2 percent special sales tax incentive—covering $4.5 million of the $10.5 million cost—and set a new construction deadline for the upcoming Downtown Olathe Char Bar Smoked Meats and Pickleball restaurant.

The added tax will be levied for 22 years to fund construction expenses.

The Olathe City Council approved a plan to raise tax revenue in 2026 by exceeding the revenue neutral rate.

The city will use a mill levy of 23.317—thanks to a 7 percent rise in home appraisals, it is set to collect about $10 million more in taxes.

Habitat for Humanity is building a $5 million affordable housing project that will add 14 single-family homes in Olathe near 159th Street and Black Bob Road using volunteers and local partners—its first homeowner has already been accepted.

The neighborhood will include green space and a park, and eight homes are expected to be finished by year’s end—providing stable, affordable options for local families.
