ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Overnight storms on July 17 knocked out power for over 12,000 residents in Johnson County and led to water rescues from flooded roads, including a closure of I-35 in Merriam—officials reported no injuries and a flood warning remained until 9 a.m. Thursday.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials approved Tuesday a 2 percent special sales tax incentive—covering $4.5 million of the $10.5 million cost—and set a new construction deadline for the upcoming Downtown Olathe Char Bar Smoked Meats and Pickleball restaurant. The added tax will be levied for 22 years to fund construction expenses.  Olathe Reporter
  • The Olathe City Council approved a plan to raise tax revenue in 2026 by exceeding the revenue neutral rate. The city will use a mill levy of 23.317—thanks to a 7 percent rise in home appraisals, it is set to collect about $10 million more in taxes.  Olathe Reporter

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity is building a $5 million affordable housing project that will add 14 single-family homes in Olathe near 159th Street and Black Bob Road using volunteers and local partners—its first homeowner has already been accepted. The neighborhood will include green space and a park, and eight homes are expected to be finished by year’s end—providing stable, affordable options for local families.  Johnson County Post
