ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A family in Fairway was displaced after a fire started in the garage when a lithium-ion battery charger triggered an explosion — firefighters from three departments controlled the blaze quickly despite extreme heat, and no one was injured.  Johnson County Post

  • The Asian fusion restaurant Asian Pearl in Olathe announced its impending closure after more than a decade in business due to an expired lease. It operates at 18138 W. 119th St.—near fast-casual chains Arby’s and Chipotle—and remains open with no set closing date as it thanks customers for their support.  Johnson County Post

CRIME NEWS

  • Salvador Garcia-Zarate, a 44-year-old man, was sentenced on Monday to over 27 years in prison for two counts of second-degree murder in a 2021 double homicide in Olathe—officers said victims Angela Santiago and Jose Arellano-Rascon were found in a parked car near South Sunset and East Fredrickson Drives.  FOX 4 Kansas City

  • The Olathe Fire Department paused its Community Emergency Response Team training for residents due to financial challenges and will reimagine the program next year (this change does not affect current emergency responses).  Johnson County Post

  • On Friday, July 25 at 6:50 p.m., MED-ACT and the Lenexa Fire Department responded to Kitten City Kansas Rescue where a carbon monoxide alarm indicated a dangerous situation—rescuing a 23-year-old patient and evacuating kittens from the building.  Johnson County
