  • KMBC 9 Cares for Kids is holding its 'Stuff the Bus' school supply drive at several Hy-Vee locations to support Operation Breakthrough students in the Shawnee Mission and Turner School Districts from Aug. 4 through Aug. 8, with events running from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Today at the Liberty store on 109 Blue Jay Dr.—First Student is on hand to collect supplies and community members can donate items such as notebooks, glue, and tissue boxes to help students head back to school.  KMBC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A dump truck hauling asphalt rolled over early Monday on northbound K-7 Highway at College Boulevard in Olathe and its driver was seriously injured when taken to a local hospital—crews closed the northbound lanes and diverted traffic from W. 119th Street.  KSHB

CRIME NEWS

  • Retired Olathe Police detective Brian Peters, who spent 31 years on the job including 24 years with the department, was killed in a motorcycle crash involving two vehicles on Saturday morning in Gardner — police ask witnesses to call Detective Deer as investigators work to determine the crash cause.  FOX 4 Kansas City

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local and regional school districts are preparing for the 2025-26 school year with enrollment and orientation events scheduled for next week—Olathe Public Schools will open enrollment for grades K-5, 6 and 9 on Aug. 13 and start classes on Aug. 14. Other districts have planned similar activities between Aug. 11 and Aug. 20 to ease students' transition back to school.  KCTV 5
  • Many local parents are setting firm routines during summer's end to help their children adjust when classes resume as early next week — they are focusing on earlier bedtimes and smoother morning schedules for a better start to the school year.  KSHB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After deadly flash floods struck Johnson County last month, local officials and the National Weather Service urge residents to heed warnings and move to higher ground during heavy rains. Officials in Olathe noted that updated stormwater programs and flood control projects have reduced local flooding in key areas—though drivers still face risks from standing water.  Johnson County Post

  • The Olathe Police Department is asking city council to approve the purchase of three drones that will be used on calls. The department said the drones will be stationed on city buildings—if approved—to help with emergencies.  Olathe Reporter
