Good morning, Olathe. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 15th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 30 Olathe residents attended a packed meeting on Monday to oppose the proposed cold storage facility at 175th and Lone Elm because they cited concerns over increased semitruck traffic and chemical safety risks — the plan covers 175 acres and features a 14-story building plus other industrial structures while city planners plan to widen the roads although funding is not secured.  Olathe Reporter
  • Kill Creek Park in western Johnson County will expand from 900 to 3,000 acres on land from the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant and will become the county's largest park once the cleanup—funded by the Army—is completed in 2028. Residents will have a chance to share ideas for new park features at a public input session planned for early October.  KSHB

CRIME NEWS

  • Overland Park police warn parents that oversharing back-to-school photos online may give predators access to a child's full name, school, and home address — putting kids at risk. Shawnee mom Emily Brownlee now takes photos from behind or uses an emoji over faces to keep memories while protecting privacy.  KSHB
  • Armando Javier Guerrero pleaded guilty in Johnson County District Court to voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting 21-year-old Landen Roggenkamp on March 29 in an apartment behind two schools in Olathe—he is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 25.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Johnson County Post will host 12 nights of candidate forums for local races for mayor, city council, school board and JCCC board from Sept. 10 to Oct. 15—each event lets voters hear directly from the candidates with questions gathered from readers, including an Olathe forum on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at K-State Olathe.  Johnson County Post
