- ➤ Pizza 51 opened downtown this summer as the first restaurant in a plan to revitalize the area into an entertainment district — the plan aims to add more restaurants, housing and retail, with owner Jason Pryor and city officials expecting further progress including a permanent farmers market by next summer. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Johnson County Board of Commissioners approved $2.38 million in federal funds for Metro Lutheran Ministry to create up to 16 rental units for homeless residents by late 2026 or early 2027 in the county. The nonprofit will soon begin searching countywide for multifamily housing units + offer supportive case management and a sliding rent scale. KSHB
- ➤ Kansas officials said on Aug. 18 that they will not provide sensitive SNAP data for over 730,000 applicants to the USDA to protect private information. The state noted that the data includes names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and addresses + retailer information, and it expects gathering the details may cost taxpayers at least $100,000 while litigation is pending.
