Good morning, Olathe. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 23rd of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city of Olathe awards about $450,000 in federal funds each year through the Community Development Block Grant program to help low-to-moderate income neighborhoods rebuild homes + support local charities that offer housing assistance. Christina Campos of Catholic Charities said the funding helps families avoid utility shutoffs and lets children concentrate on school.  Olathe Reporter

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Olathe Public Schools and city government continued their longstanding school resource officer agreement—approved by city council Tuesday—with 16 full-time uniformed police officers and two full-time sergeants provided for the school year as both sides share the costs equally.  Olathe Reporter
  • The city will convert Quivira Road from 143rd Street to 151st Street into a divided road with turn lanes. Workers will start moving utilities in September and full reconstruction will begin in spring 2026—improvements include pavement, curbs, medians, streetlights, sidewalks, bike lanes and storm sewers.  Olathe Reporter
  • At a Wednesday night hearing at the Olathe Conference Center, about 50 residents criticized Johnson County's 2026 budget for keeping a flat property tax rate despite rising home values — many said the move would hurt those on fixed incomes. Commissioners advanced the proposal and will hold a final vote on Aug. 28 — a decision that may prompt voters to challenge officials next year.  Johnson County Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Several Kansas residents contracted West Nile Virus as mosquitoes became more active due to warm weather and rain — public health experts urge Olathe residents to wear long, light-colored clothing and eliminate standing water to lower exposure; Mosquito Joe owner Terry Fritz offered these tips.  KSNT
  • Two metro soldiers, Colonel Robert Thompson and retired Colonel Dave Johnson, began biking over 400 miles from the Colorado-Kansas border to the Kansas-Missouri border on August 22 to raise awareness for military suicide— they average 60 to 70 miles per day and will stop at local gas stations and diners to boost businesses along the route.  KCTV 5
