CRIME NEWS

  • Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said he will not pursue charges against a Shawnee officer who used deadly force on June 17—when he shot 19-year-old Issac Ortiz after a chase following a report of gunfire near 67th Street and Lackman Road—while Ortiz now faces charges of attempted capital murder and is held on a $500,000 bond.  FOX 4 Kansas City

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Olathe City Council members said they did not want to spend $25 million on a proposed animal shelter and will ask Johnson County to build and maintain the facility—adding Olathe into its animal control program. The decision came during a meeting to approve public easements on shelter land—final approval of the shelter plan is still pending.  Olathe Reporter
  • On Tuesday, Olathe residents asked city council to cut spending in the 2026 budget so that property taxes remain lower. The council will vote on the plan on Sept. 16 as increased home appraisals push tax bills higher.  Olathe Reporter
