- ➤ Johnson County nonprofit Care Package Inbound is hosting a public packing event on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Brew Haha Coffeehouse to assemble 500 care packages for foster children in Kansas and Missouri—each bag contains clothes, hygiene products and toys to help ease their transition into new homes. - ➤ Olivia Copeland—daughter of former Mayor Michael Copeland—died during a climbing incident in Colorado last weekend as her family works to learn more about the accident. KSHB

- ➤ Champion Burritos opened a new restaurant at 539 E. Santa Fe St. in Olathe last week and is drawing a crowd with fresh Mexican dishes like burritos and tacos. Owner Ernesto Aguirre, who began the chain nearly 15 years ago in North Kansas City, said he will add more locations and offer catering services in the future—showing plans for further expansion. - ➤ Kansas farmers face risks as sorghum prices drop to $3.7 per bushel from $4.1 last year while yields remain strong for the fall harvest, a 97% decline in exports to China driving the price fall—farmers may have to choose riskier storage methods to manage the crop. KSNT

- ➤ Olathe's City Council approved a $627 million budget for 2026—keeping the mill rate at 23.17 while rising home values will make most homeowners pay about $7.42 more per month; nearly three-quarters of the budget will fund public safety, infrastructure, and a five-year capital improvement plan through 2030. - ➤ Attorney General Kris Kobach announced on Tuesday, Sept. 23 that his office sued Snapchat in Washington County District Court, alleging the company misrepresented its app as safe for children while exposing users to explicit content, drug ads, and sexual solicitations—its design reportedly uses addictive features that target young users. The lawsuit claims that features like Snapstreaks and an infinite scroll have harmed Kansas families. KSNT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Olathe Fire Department earned Gold Helmet recognition for enrolling over 50% of its firefighters in the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer—part of a nationwide effort to lower cancer risk among firefighters. Olathe Reporter
- ➤ Bats, skunks, horses and other animals have tested positive for rabies in Kansas so far this year—with 20 cases recorded by Sept. 8 across several counties. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said skunks and bats make up most cases while human cases remain rare. KSNT
