ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Olivia Copeland, daughter of late Olathe mayor Michael Copeland, died on Saturday when she fell while rappelling off a cliff during a rock climbing tour in Idaho Springs, Colorado—she was 26.  Johnson County Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers from Olathe, Blue Valley and Gardner Edgerton were honored for their work — with nominations for awards and top rankings for Olathe schools — while a local freshman was named a state delegate at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. Probationers harvested produce and community groups supported school programs to mark a series of recent local achievements.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Laura Kelly requested an extension for federal disaster declarations after severe storms on Sept. 8—10 caused flooding in parts of Kansas. The extension allows counties until Nov. 9 to complete damage assessments with FEMA and verify costs under the Public Assistance Program.  KCTV 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kansas health officials warned on Sept. 24 that 7-OH products sold in gas stations, smoke shops and convenience stores can be very harmful+ mixing them with alcohol or sedatives may cause serious breathing problems, addiction or death. They urge people to avoid these products, check labels and consult a doctor if they experience any adverse reactions.  KSNT

  • Apple season peaks this weekend as nearly perfect weather makes U-Pick orchards in Kansas and Missouri a great outing for families—apple trees originally came from Central Asia and are not native to the area.  KCTV 5
