COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nan Kanter—who launched the Blue Valley Special Olympics program over three decades ago—volunteers 10 to 15 hours each week for about 160 athletes who compete in sports and join social events. Her continued support builds opportunities for people with varying abilities and strengthens community bonds in Blue Valley.  Johnson County Post
  • Today, the Olathe Communities that Care coalition is hosting a free Family Day at Indian Creek Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—the event features games, live performances, pumpkin painting, story time, a photo booth and a touch-a-truck experience with the fire department. The gathering concludes the coalition’s Family Week campaign—focused on keeping youth safe by preventing drug use, underage drinking and violence.  Johnson County Post

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Evergy, TerraPower and the Kansas Department of Commerce signed a memorandum Tuesday to study sites in the eastern third of Kansas for a new nuclear power plant using TerraPower’s natrium technology to meet a growing need for electricity—the companies will announce next year if the project moves forward, with a three-year timeline for the reactor if approved.  KSNT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County announced a $21 million FAA grant that will renovate Runway 18-36 at New Century AirCenter—this project will update the runway, lighting and signage to meet current safety standards and support local commerce. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.  FOX 4 Kansas City
  • The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners recognized the county's Park and Recreation District on Thursday for winning the 2025 National Gold Medal Award - the top honor in parks and recreation management. The District was one of four finalists nationwide and this marks its third national award following previous wins in 1995 and 2017.  Johnson County

SPORTS NEWS

  • NASCAR drivers and fans will gather at Kansas Speedway for the Hollywood Casino 400 that will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Track president Pat Warren and driver Ross Chastain said the track’s improved progressive banking — which allows multiple lanes racing — will lead to aggressive racing.  FOX 4 Kansas City
