BUSINESS NEWS

  • Older shoppers 55 and older at Dillons in Olathe will be able to get a one-day 10% grocery discount on select items including produce and household essentials on Wednesday, Oct. 1 — customers must request the discount at checkout, and some items are excluded.  KSNT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Evergy, TerraPower and the Kansas Department of Commerce signed a memorandum of understanding last Tuesday to explore siting a Natrium reactor and energy storage system in Evergy’s Kansas territory — the companies will evaluate site factors like technical design and licensing to plan for a new, clean energy source in Kansas.  KSHB
  • The Post distributed questionnaires to Johnson County candidates based on reader suggestions and will publish responses from October 20 through October 24 + host 12 live candidate forums before early voting on October 25. These steps aim to help local voters understand candidates' views ahead of the Nov. 4 election.  Johnson County Post
  • Kansas City-area lawmakers are researching new VA copay requirements after an email tip revealed that some veterans may soon have to pay $15 for fitness classes starting Oct. 1. Congressman Mark Alford and Sen. Jerry Moran are seeking more details—veterans have not received written confirmation—leaving the ultimate impact unclear.  KSHB
  • Johnson County invites residents to review draft zoning proposals at three public open houses on Oct. 7th+Oct. 8th+Oct. 9th to update land use rules in unincorporated areas. Attendees can drop in to ask questions and provide feedback, with the Olathe meeting held on Oct. 8th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson County Administration Building.  Johnson County
  • Farmer Steve Bowlin at Bowlin Farms near De Soto said he welcomed the USDA rollback of a costly wage survey requirement that has driven up the cost of hiring his two H-2A workers—workers who support his farm for nearly eight months each season. USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins said the agency will work with Labor and Homeland Security to simplify the visa process, but Bowlin will decide next year if he can bring his seasonal workers back.  KSHB
