Good morning, Olathe. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 1st of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Longtime volunteer Orrin Lovewell ended his 18th season at the Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead after its Halloween festivities closed Friday—he will now begin winterizing the grounds to maintain nearly two decades of service since 2007. He was honored with the Distinguished Volunteer Award by the Kansas Recreation and Park Association in 2023.  Johnson County Post
  • Dave McClung, an 82-year-old from Olathe, became the oldest person to trek to Everest’s south base camp by hiking eight days with his son and using training from local hills. He said the thin air and rugged trails made the journey challenging—his special shoes helped him keep his balance along the way.  FOX 4 Kansas City

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local Head Start programs in Olathe and Overland Park are secure because they received their annual grants in July — yet other regional programs that normally receive funding on Nov. 1 face financial risk if the federal shutdown continues. Officials warned that if the shutdown persists, some programs may have to close by Nov. 30 — a move that could impact over 2,300 children across the county.  Johnson County Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Wyandotte County Public Health Department said whooping cough cases are rising and urged community members and health providers to watch for symptoms and update vaccinations; as of Oct. 17, 75 cases were reported. Officials stressed that early treatment and good hygiene—especially for infants and vulnerable residents—are key to slowing the spread.  FOX 4 Kansas City
