COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local law enforcement officers will join the Cram the Cruiser toy drive today at 12:30 p.m. near Target at 119th and Strang Line in Olathe— they will shop for toys to donate to the Snowflake Shoppe at Children’s Mercy Hospital where families can get free gifts. The public can also donate new, unwrapped toys on Dec. 6 at three park locations or drop them off at JCPRD facilities until Dec. 13.  FOX 4 Kansas City
  • A float will honor Chad Stacy, an Olathe tissue donor who died in a car accident in 2017, at the Rose Parade this New Year’s Day as his family displays a floragraph made from organic materials—his donation has helped more than 150 recipients, and his relatives will attend the parade in California to remember him.  FOX 4 Kansas City

  • UMB Bank completed its acquisition of Bank of Blue Valley in January and officially changed its five Johnson County branches to the UMB brand in October—expanding its network to about 190 branches and 340 ATMs while extending its reach to 13 states.  Johnson County Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Olathe West High students are joining Kansas' new statewide e-sports league to compete for college scholarships as teams must register by November 30 and competitions run from December to January — the move transforms a popular after-school club into an official sport that opens new doors for future education opportunities.  KCTV 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local officials and health experts in Overland Park and Kansas City are increasingly concerned about 7-OH—a synthetic derivative of kratom with opioid-like potency and addictive risks—as its use spreads unchecked. City leaders, including a KCMO councilman—planning potential restrictions today and for the 2026 legislative session, are reviewing further steps after past regulatory efforts in 2023 and 2025 failed.  KSHB
  • The Olathe city council approved a contract Tuesday to purchase a new playground installation at Cedar Lake Park. The equipment will include a covered structure with two slides—rock-like climbing areas with netting—animal-shaped play structures—and rubber mulch surfacing.  Olathe Reporter

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, KSHSAA will vote on a new plan for state high school softball and baseball championship venues after a public meeting presented three options addressing concerns over unequal field quality. One option allows top-seeded teams to host quarterfinal games + the other plans propose rotating assignments to give all classes a chance to play at quality facilities.  FOX 4 Kansas City
