ECONOMY NEWS

  • KSHB 41's Elyse Schoenig visited a Hy-Vee in Shawnee to test Thanksgiving prices and found that the cost of staples averages $55.18 for 10 people (about $5.52 each), backing the American Farm Bureau Federation’s forecast of lower costs than last year. Some local shoppers said they spent nearly the same as the previous Thanksgiving, confirming steady prices in the area.  KSHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • JCCC offers a STEM Scholars Program that gives students one-on-one faculty mentorship, research opportunities and academic support to earn an associate of science degree that transfers to most area colleges—helping them prepare for a STEM bachelor's degree. The program also awards up to $10,000 per year in scholarships for tuition and other expenses.  Johnson County Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County officials approved a new 25-year transit plan that will increase bus frequency, cut some express routes, scale back microtransit, and eventually reinstate fares. The bus service is set to be rebranded as (Ride JoCo) and route changes (starting January) will take effect while further updates may come in August as the county prepares for the World Cup.  Johnson County Post
  • On November 13, commissioners approved a measure that will raise ambulance fees and hire nine new EMTs in 2026 using $1.2 million from general fund reserves to handle a 67% surge in calls since 2010. The changes will expand service hours and aim to improve response times—officials noted the fee increase may affect uninsured patients.  Johnson County Post
  • The FDA seized 8,819 products containing the substance 7-OH at American Shaman facilities on Nov. 12 after warning letters were issued on June 25 for unapproved products that pose serious health risks—local authorities and the FDA are investigating these dangerous products and their widespread sale. This action follows growing concerns about the potent effects of the synthetic substance in communities across the metro area.  KSHB
