COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Karen Boyd has spent 37 years volunteering for the local Christmas Bureau’s holiday shop in Shawnee, where a pop-up store served low-income families with toys and essentials in early December—she was honored with a Volunteer of the Year award at the bureau’s 65th Anniversary Gala.  Johnson County Post

FINANCE NEWS

  • Taylor Hemness reported that local economist Aditi Routh said buy now pay later plans work best for big purchases paid in four installments but warned that using them for everyday items like groceries may hurt credit because longer repayment terms can add interest.  KSHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Johnson County commissioners passed a nonbinding resolution on Thursday urging TerraPower to include the county as a potential site for a 345-megawatt Natrium reactor. Site selection is planned for 2026 and if the reactor goes online by 2030 it could boost local jobs and tax revenue.  Johnson County Post
  • Olathe city council will vote Tuesday on a plan to offer 10-year (80%) tax abatements in south Olathe for projects that include data centers, offices, healthcare and aerospace, along with warehouses, bioscience, manufacturing, finance and energy. The program raises incentives from the previous 50% rate to attract diverse businesses.  Olathe Reporter

  • Local University Health doctors advise parents against gifting electric bikes and e-scooters for children due to serious injury risks + warn that battery-operated toys and trampolines may also be unsafe.  KSHB
  • Pharmacy of Grace is preparing to open a new nonprofit pharmacy in Shawnee next spring to provide uninsured residents with affordable medication and counseling. The effort, set at 11644 West 75th St. alongside Mercy & Truth Healthcare Ministry, aims to raise $705,800 for equipment and staffing.  Johnson County Post
