CRIME NEWS

  • Overland Park Police launched a cold case page on its website last month to share photos and details from unsolved homicides between 1973 and 2015 and are asking anyone with information to call crime stoppers at 816-474-8477+ to help solve the cases.  Johnson County Post
  • On June 22, Lenexa officers shot and killed 25-year-old Jose Enrique Cartagena Chacon at Lenexa Crossing Apartments—two officers were placed on leave as the ACLU urged the department to release police footage while Olathe Police lead the ongoing investigation.  Johnson County Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Olathe Public Schools discussed a proposal to close Westview Elementary School at a meeting Thursday at 5:45 p.m.—if approved, the school will close at the end of the 2025/2026 year and be repurposed for an alternative education program. The school, which enrolls about 150 students, has shown steady declines in enrollment as noted by the district’s Boundary Study Group.  FOX 4 Kansas City
  • School districts in Kansas and Missouri face a funding shortfall after federal education funds expected on payday were not disbursed; Olathe Public Schools is short over $1 million and may pass the cost on to local taxpayers if the funds do not come soon—administrators say education for students will continue without interruption.  KMBC
  • The Olathe School Board will decide on Thursday whether Westview Elementary will be repurposed as an alternative education site for kindergarten through 8th grade for the 2026-27 school year. If approved, community meetings will help determine new school assignments—guiding affected families.  KCTV 5

  • The Kansas Office of Registered Apprenticeship announced that the state hit a record of 3,500 registered apprentices on July 8—over 1,000 employers had joined by July 10. The milestones highlight a strong push in building career pathways in Kansas.  KSNT
